Overview
Department of Publication was established in April, 1924 by the Imperial Government at Kolkata (West Bengal) with the primary aim to disseminate government information to the general public which was initially, limited to government’s reports only. Over the years, the functions of the department has been widened covering sale and distribution of books and periodicals. The office was shifted to Delhi in the year 1932-33 . The Department of Publication attained separate identity, in the year 1973 as Department of Publication with ‘Controller of Publications’ as the ‘Head of the Department’. It is now a subordinate department under the administrative control of union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
The department has the distinction of publishing over 8000 titles out of which a large number of titles are in circulation. While some titles are weeded out, a number of new titles are published every month adding to the list of government publications available for sale through department of publications. The publications are categorized in the ministry’s name and their stores management in also arranged accordingly for prompt and convenient access.

- Publication of gazette notifications as publisher and custodian of Gazette of India and Delhi Gazette.
- Publication of gazette notices for change of name, adoption of child, lost / destroyed /stolen items etc.
